Alternator replacement estimate template for mobile mechanics
A dead alternator is a driveway job: the car often can’t get to a shop, so the customer calls you. This template covers the test, the swap and the extras that turn a fair price into an argument when they are left off. Copy it, print it, or build it in GarageSolo.

Published labor times for an alternator
Times other publishers state, read in October 2026. They differ by vehicle, access and who is counting, so check them against the labor guide you already use.
| Job | What each publisher states | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator | Jerry: 1.0 to 3.5 hours. CarParts.com: 1 to 2.5 hours | 2 |
A filled-in example
These are example numbers. The hour and a half to replace the alternator is inside both published ranges above. The half hour for the test is an example with no published time behind it. Your labor guide, your parts store and your rate decide the real ones. The $100 per hour sits in the most common shop labor rate band, $100 to $119, in a 2025 PartsTech survey reported by Ratchet+Wrench. The $40 service call sits inside the $25 to $75 trip fees EC Mobile Auto Services reports for California mobile mechanics.
Remanufactured alternator on a four-cylinder sedan, belt reused:
| Type | Description | Qty or hours | Rate or unit price | Line total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Labor | Charging system test | 0.5 h | $100 per hour | $50 |
| Labor | Replace alternator | 1.5 h | $100 per hour | $150 |
| Part | Remanufactured alternator | 1 | $200 | $200 |
| Fee | Mobile service call | 1 | $40 | $40 |
Subtotal $440. Tax at an example 7% on the parts line ($200) is $14. Total $454.
How to price each line
The test is its own line. Testing before you quote is what separates a mechanic from a parts swapper. Put it on the estimate, so the customer sees what they paid for even if the problem turns out to be a battery or a corroded cable.
Labor. Use the book time for the exact year, make, model and engine. Published times run from 1 hour to 3.5 hours, because some alternators sit up top and some sit under an intake or behind a wheel well. Never quote an alternator job from memory of a different car.
New or remanufactured. Write which one you are installing on the part line. If you quote both, make them two separate estimates so the customer picks one.
Core charge. Parts stores add a core charge and credit it back when the old unit goes in. Decide whether you show it to the customer or handle it yourself, and do it the same way every time.
The belt. If the belt is cracked or glazed, quote it as its own line. A new alternator on an old belt is a callback waiting to happen.
The battery. A failed alternator often leaves a battery that won’t hold a charge. Test it, write the result, and quote a battery as a separate line or a separate estimate.
Build it in GarageSolo instead of on paper
- Start a job with the customer and the vehicle.
- Add the test and the replacement as labor lines: hours times your rate.
- The alternator goes on a part line: quantity times price.
- The service call goes on a fee line, named the way you name it.
- Mark which lines are taxable. The app adds the subtotal, the tax and the total.
- Turn the screen around: that’s your quote, line by line.
- Back in range, share the estimate link. The customer approves it there, with no login, or declines it.
You can write up the estimate with zero bars in the driveway. It saves on your phone and syncs when you are back in range. Sharing the link needs a signal.
When the work is done, create the invoice from the same job, with the same lines, and email it to the customer.

Alternator estimate questions
How long does an alternator replacement take?
Jerry publishes 1.0 to 3.5 hours and CarParts.com 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on where the alternator sits on that engine. Use your labor guide’s time for the exact vehicle.
Should I charge for the charging system test if I end up replacing the alternator?
That is your call, and either way it belongs on the estimate. Keeping the test as its own line means the customer pays the same for the test whatever it finds.
What if the customer already bought the alternator?
Quote the test, the labor and the service call, and note on the estimate that the customer supplied the part.
Do I put the core charge on the customer’s estimate?
If the customer is keeping the old unit, yes. If you return it, you can leave it off. Pick one way and stick to it.
