A generic invoice app for mechanics isn’t an invoice app for mechanics.

The free invoice app on your phone has a “description” box and a price. No vehicle, no service history, no hours × rate. So your brake job becomes one line: Brakes — $412.

The customer looks at it and sees a number. They don’t see the two hours of labor, the pads and rotors, or the forty minutes you drove to get there. So the number looks high, the questions start, and next time they call somebody else.

And that’s the invoice you remembered to send. The one you wrote on a receipt and lost in the console is $300 you did for free.

What a good mobile mechanic invoice app puts on every line

An invoice from a mobile mechanic has to do two jobs at once: get you paid and explain the number. Here’s what goes on one, and how GARAGE handles each piece.

Labor lines. One per task, with your hours and your rate. Replace rear pads and rotors — 1.8 hrs. The customer sees the work, not a lump sum.

Parts lines. Each part, with the quantity and the price. Pads. Rotors. Hardware kit. If you marked it up, it still reads as a part, which is what it is.

The trip as its own line. This is the one most mobile mechanics leave off, and it’s the one that separates you from a shop with a lift. You drove to them. That has a cost. Put it on the invoice as its own line, with a plain name like Mobile service call or Travel, so it never gets argued as “part of the labor.”

Advice, not a featureHow to price the trip (advice, not a feature): a simple rule that holds up is miles driven × your cost per mile, plus the drive time × your labor rate. Example numbers: 18 miles each way at $0.70/mile is about $25, and 40 minutes of drive time at $90/hr is $60, so the trip line reads around $85. Set your own numbers once, and type that line the same way on every job. GARAGE doesn’t work this out for you; you add the line with the amount you decided on.

The vehicle and the customer. Year, make, model, and the customer’s name on the invoice, pulled from their record, so the invoice matches the service history next time they call.

A clean PDF, on every plan. No Garage Solo branding on your invoices, even on Free.

Subtotal, tax, total. Obvious, until the generic app makes you do the tax by hand.

The invoice starts at the car, where you fixed it

The reason invoices go out late, or never, is that they get written twice: once in your head at the car, once for real at night. GARAGE cuts the second one.

1. Build the job where you’re standing.

Start the job and pick the customer and vehicle from your list. Add the labor lines and parts lines as you go. It saves on the phone, so a dead zone doesn’t stop you.

2. Show them the estimate before you turn a wrench.

Tap Estimate and the PDF generates on the phone, no signal needed. They see every line and the total, and they say yes to a number they understand.

3. Add what you find.

Stripped caliper bolt? Add the line. The invoice will match what you actually did, because you wrote it while you were doing it.

4. Turn it into an invoice before you pack up.

The job’s done, so create the invoice from it, right there. Still no signal needed.

5. Send it at the first bar.

Everything you wrote syncs on its own when the bars come back (Offline → Syncing… → Synced). Then tap Send Invoice.

(Emailing the invoice needs a signal. Writing the job and creating the invoice don’t. Opening customer and vehicle pages also needs a signal. We’d rather say so here than have you find out in a driveway. The full breakdown is on the offline page.)

Built by a mechanic who got tired of writing invoices twice

GARAGE was built by Javier Ramos, a US Air Force veteran and mobile mechanic in Middle Georgia. He was writing estimates on paper and keeping track of who paid what in his head. When a customer paid fifty and said “I’ll pay you Thursday,” there was nothing in writing. So he built the invoice app he needed: one that gets written at the car and goes out before he leaves.

GARAGE is new. What you’ll find instead of a long track record is a real person reading every email. Questions? support@garagesolo.com

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know about GARAGE

01 Can I put labor and parts on separate lines?
Yes. Each labor task and each part is its own line with its own price, so the customer sees the work and the parts, not one lump number.
02 Can I charge for the drive?
Yes. Add it as its own line, named whatever you call it (Mobile service call, Travel), with the amount you decided on. You set the number; the app doesn’t calculate it for you.
03 Does Solo put my logo on the invoice?
Yes, with Solo or Solo Pro: your logo and business name go on every estimate and invoice. On Free, invoices are clean PDFs with no logo and no Garage Solo branding.
04 Can I write the invoice with no cell signal?
Yes. With no signal you can pick the customer and vehicle, add labor and parts lines, make the PDF estimate and create the invoice. It syncs on its own when the bars come back. Emailing the invoice needs a signal.
05 How does the customer get the invoice?
By email, as a PDF, from inside the app.
06 What does Free actually include?
Five invoices a month with no time limit and no card. Enough to run it on real jobs this week and decide if it earns a spot in your van.
07 Is this mechanic invoice software or a full shop system?
Both. The invoice is one end of it. Behind it are the customer records, vehicles, service history, jobs and estimates it’s built from. Start with just invoicing. The customer and vehicle records fill in as you go.
08 Do I need to download an app?
No. Open it in your phone’s browser and add it to your home screen. It works on iPhone and Android.
09 Who’s behind it?
Javier Ramos, a US Air Force veteran and mobile mechanic in Middle Georgia, who built it for his own business first.
